Bike, Rollerblade, Walk, or Run! The Paul Bunyan Trail is waiting for
you! This paved trail runs from the Crow Wing State Park south of
Brainerd to Lake Bemidji 110 miles north. During the winter months
snowmobilers can take advantage of this trail as a link to the areas
many trail systems.
The Paul Bunyan Trail runs along the railroad lines originally built in
1893 by the Burlington Northern Railroad. When the railroad abandoned
this line the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources purchased it and
this mighty trail was born.
Passing through Downtown Nisswa, easy parking is available in town or at
the trailside parking lot by the Dairy Queen. Rolling along many lakes
passing through the silent woods you will enjoy this ribbon of beauty.
The level nature of the Paul Bunyan Trail makes for a relaxing ride for
all ages.
Bicycle and skate rentals are available in Nisswa, making an afternoon
adventure a simple option!
Heading south from Nisswa will take you to the Lake Hubert Depot, then
along the shore of Lake Hubert To Merrifield on the shores of North Long
Lake. A trip north passes along the Cullen Lakes to the towns of Nisswa,
Jenkins, and Pine River.
The railroad was the main transportation to many of these towns, and you
can enjoy where the trail takes you today! Stop and try some hometown
cooking or a pop or ice cream cone along the way. Check out the many
souvenir and gift shops, or just stop along the trail and enjoy the
view.
You will want to make the Paul Bunyan Trail a part of your vacation. To
get there head North on Minnesota 371 for 5 miles and take a right onto
Main Street into downtown Nisswa.
